Dog Year

2006, the Fire Dog (Bing Xu) Year

January 29, 2006 through February 17, 2007

The optimist sees opportunity in every danger; the pessimist sees danger in every opportunity.
-- Winston Churchill (a dog)

The Dog is rich in Chinese history and tradition. Whether shown guarding ancient Buddhist temples or depicted as protector of sacred buildings and a defender of law, the Dog is known for it's loyalty, tenacity and watchfulness. Many times displayed in a powerful guarding position, the Dog was the protector of peace and serenity in the sanctuary it was guarding.

The "Foo Dog" is a popular representation and is known as the Celestial Dog or Happiness Dog. It is a symbol of energy and value, and is often displayed in a male/female pair. The male holds a sphere that symbolizes the Earth, while the female holds her offspring.

The year of the Yang (+) Dog teaches the lessons of watchfulness, defense of the weak and fair play. International justice will be the order of the year. Causes, protests and the righting of wrongs defines Dog years. Out of intense complexities, intense simplicities emerge.

What to avoid in 2006:
- Guilt-trips (would have/ should have/ could have's)
- Pity-parties (I'll just sit here in the dark by myself)
- Pride ("cutting off one's nose to spite the face")
- Hanging on to dead-end anything (from relationships to clutter)
- Excessive worrying
- Panic (and it's ugly sisters -- anxiety and worry)

What to hold on to in 2006:
- A cause or special purpose
- Old friends who have stood the test of time
- Your Principles
- The Family Circle

The Dog year and those under it's influence are protectors of morals and defenders of the weak. Causes, revolutions and human-rights are on the agenda for the Dog year. The watchful Dog keeps us one step ahead of those who would harm us. However, while a single dose of anticipation is healthy, a double dose can be toxic and result in paranoia, expecting problems around every corner and jumping to conclusions throughout 2006.

Parents can expect to pull their offspring out of a scuffle or two this year. In like kind, these same parents may have to exercise herculean self-control at the workplace when the office bully flexes their muscles. Loyalty in relationships becomes more important than ever this year and best results are achieved by taking the high road in any given situation. Best results are acheieved when worry is transformed into advance thinking and planning.

Historic Dog-year natural Distasters:
- Costantinopole, 542: Bubonic plague - Water Dog
- Europe and Asia, 1346-52: Bubonic plague or "black death" (one third of the European population casualties plus millions in Asia and North Africa for a total of 25 million) - Fire Dog (1346)
- Hokkaido, 1730: Earthquake (140,000 casualties) - Metal Dog
- Japan, 1826: Tsunami (27,000 casualties) - Fire Dog
- Bihar, India, 1934: 8.1 earthquake (10,700 casualties) - Wood Dog
- The April 1, 1946 Earthquake and Tsunami in the Aleutian Islands - Fire Dog
- Nankaido, Japan, 1946: earthquake (1,330 casualties) - Fire Dog
- Japan, 1958: Typhoon (5,000 casualties) - Earth Dog
- Lituya Bay, Alaska, 1958: earthquake and subsequent tidal wave in bay
- North Peru, 1970: 7.8 earthquake (66,000 casualties) - Metal Dog
- Bangladesh, 1970: Sea flood (200-500,000 casualties) - Metal Dog
- Mexico, 1982: volcanic eruption (1,800 casualties) - Water Dog
- Yemen, 1982: earthquake (3,000 casualties) - Water Dog

The hidden element in the yearly Dog branch is Earth. Bing Xu (Yang Fire) is the 23rd year in the stem/branch cycle of 60. The Earth of the Dog year branch combining with the Fire element stem of 2006 will be very good financially, as Earth supports Fire and therefore enables wealth.

Your Element in 2006 Fire Dog "Bing Xu" Year:
Best Year for those born into Year of: Earth (Which Supports Fire and therefore Enables Wealth)
Good for: Water element (which controls Fire)
Mixed Year for: Fire element souls as the double-dose of Fire may consume much of their energy
Challenging Year for: Wood element souls (Wood is consumed by Fire and therefore leaves the person feeling depleted)
Difficult Year for: Metal element persons (both Birth Year element and "daymaster" element) Metal loses it's form and is melted to liquid by Fire. Powerlessness can result

The beginning of 2006 brings a very auspicious time for Oxen. A time of forward-thinking and flexibility. Socially, relax some and try to have more fun. As JAN approaches, a more obstinate streak in dutiful Oxen rears it's head. Your ideas tend to be set in stone now and this could lead to confrontations on hot issues such as money, children and sex. Compromise can only be productive and give and take on both sides brings a satisfying conclusion. FEB's energies highlight “out with the old and in with the new.” A potential change in living arrangements, while unsettling, will open the door to new adventures which await you this year.

A thorough interpersonal housecleaning would serve you well and a parting of ways may be eminent between you and a partner or close associate. Life and love improve after JAN as the Rabbit's good friend the Dog ushers in a New Year and auspicious energies for you on the 29th. Dragons enjoy an unpredictable year rich with social invitations and increased visibility. Be cautious however, as the Dog year is your opposite sign and this may usher in the wrong kind of publicity. Whether in business or romance the Dragon finds the ideal climate in JAN's Rat-ruled month. Past projects are brought to their zenith and successful conclusion now. In FEB be sure to keep your word on any commitments during this rather stagnant period. Don't become frustrated by obstacles now as the New Year of the Dog makes it's entrance on the 29th. As the Rabbit-ruled month of MAR arrives, Dragons find the potential for career improvement and recognition for successful achievement. An award of some type may also be involved.

2006 should be a time of rest, recuperation and a lightened workload for artistic Goat souls. JAN may be the most challenging months of this season. Hold your current path and don't make any sudden or life-altering changes for the time being. Buy a new sketchbook, favorite hobby/craft supplies or update your personal journal. The Tiger energy in FEB continues to rub against the peace loving Goat's grain. The lesson now is the wisdom of the middle path of moderation and patience. A productive month starts off 2006 for busy Roosters. Your organizational skills really pay off. JAN's Ox-ruled month is very auspicious and for single Roosters there should be plenty of admirers, some from diverse backgrounds. Consider spending some time with a strong and silent type Ox or a sage and sophisticated Snake. FEB could be a bump in the road and difficult month for Roosters as the diffident Dog heralds in the New Year. Use this friction in a positive way to consider improvements to your environment. House extensions, or changing your living space is favored, but hold off on any major move of locations.

2006 brings a period of growth and development. Steps taken this year will set the stage for the next two years and lead to noticeable improvements. The time can be spent usefully redistributing assets or reorganizing expenditures. The astral climate dips somewhat during the Ox-ruled month of JAN and a bit of caution is in order. It's all work and no play for a while as your workload gathers momentum. The financial benefits from this come as a lovely surprise next month. FEB's Tiger-ruled month combined with the energies of the New Dog Year make for a 4 star month! If every Dog has their day, then 2006 will indeed be yours. Enjoy!
